Maureen “Mau” Marcelo is the First Philippine Idol Winner!

December 11, 2006

A 26-year-old soulful crooner from Lucena City was declared the first-ever winner of the Philippine Idol during the star-studded finals held last night at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

Maureen "Mau" Marcelo, who belted out Whitney Houston’s "On My Own," was the sole female contender in the final three, including Gian Magdangal and Jan Nieto, who survived the six-month competition aired over ABC-5.

Marcelo, a daughter of a black American who returned to the Philippines to watch her in the finals, is a veteran of singing competitions having started singing when she was seven. She was a band singer before she joined the Philippine Idol.

She made it to the Final 12 during the wild card round after surviving the auditions that saw 10,000 hopefuls from all over Luzon alone. Marcelo received P1 million in cash and a recording contract with Sony-BMG and management contract with FremantleMedia.

The winner of the Philippine Idol, a spin-off of the hugely popular American Idol, was chosen by viewers who send their votes through text and the telephone.

Just like its American counterpart, the Philippine Idol has its resident judges - Ryan Cayabyab, Pilita Corrales and Francis Magalona.

Ryan Agoncillo hosts the competition that initially held its Performance Nights on Saturdays and Elimination Nights on Sundays, but the airings were lately moved to Sundays and Mondays in ABC-5’s attempt to attract more viewers. (Excerpt from Philippine Idol Website)

ITE Nyt Extravaganza!

Good day everyone!

Last night was the culminated activity of the PSITS ITE Nyt held at the Greenheights Gym, Buhangin Davao City. It was full of fun and excitement.

It was started with a final briefing of the PSITS Reps of the different schools in the region. It was followed by a registration of all the participants at 4:00 PM for Modern Dance and MTV Spoof events. For 5:00 PM down to 6:00 PM was finalization of all the participants, organizers were busy preparing and setting up everything and waiting for the judges as well.

The showcase started at exactly 6:00 PM with an opening prayer led by Catherine Remolleno of UIC. After which, Sharmayne Maranguit of UIC and Jehrun Flores of ADDU, started the bang with warmed greetings and welcome. They have introduced the jurors which comprises of 3 disc jockeys from ABS-CBN (kapamilya) and GMA (kapuso). These dj’s have a jamming with the crowd to make the night a memorable and unexpected one. After which was the reading of the mechanics for the Modern Dance Competition. All of the schools were really prepared for such event. They had a long week to prepare for this.

Here are the list of winners:

Champion: UM - Matina

1st Runner Up: Davao del Norte State College

2nd Runner Up: Ateneo de Davao University

WHERE’S ENTRY NO. 1? THEY TRULY DESERVED TO WIN THE TITLE! FOR YOU GUYS, A WARM CONGRATULATIONS~!

Modern  Dance Competition was the starting mood to set for all audience. This was followed by the MTV Spoof. This event showcased the different, extraordinary and flexible talents of the ITE students, even the judges were amazed with all the participants who joined in. This focused on impersonating a musical icon/s and etc. Unfortunately, my bet was entry no. 1 but due to not following one of the mechanics stated, the team fortunately was disqualified. But it’s ok, the crowd including the judges were truly amazed with those talented individuals who setted the night to remember.

Here are the list of winners:

Champion: STI

1st Runner Up: USEP

2nd Runner UP: Holy Child School of Davao

As for me, the event was quite good. The results were not that well justified, but it’s ok, it was a game of luck. I was quite disappointed for some results. You cannot please everybody. But for all the participants, KUDOS! to all of you, Congratulations for the well prepared presentation as well as to the PSITS organizers. I really observed that there was competition at that time, you can hardly identify and predict of who will be the respective winners in different categories.

See you next year! Hoping for great extravaganza next PSITS celebration!

God bless everyone!
