Last School days Activities and other Tidbits!

Hi bloggers, advance Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year to all!

As what I have promised, I will blog everything that happened during the week in the school and other left-right activities outside the academic life that I have.

December 17, 2006 - I was excited in that day since I was invited and assigned as one of the groomsmen for the Wedding of my friend. This was held at the Davao Convetion Center from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The wedding was great with some undeniable and wonderful guests present in the ceremony. It was a memorable wedding that I have attended since the groom was with tears having his moving statements to his parents all the way from Zamboanga. I kept on watching on my watch since I was invited also to attend a debut celebration of one of my students, Karen Keith Libron. I did not finish the celebration in the wedding and rushed to went home then changed my attire to suit the groovy night in Adriano’s (I think, it was Magnetic Jones before) which the debut was held. Some of my students were there aside from her classmates in HighSchool and College. Some were few invited guests from the 3rd year. Hahay…enough for that…Oh wait…that night also was full of excitement when my name was called to render songs for the debutante….kurog my heart…ako pa…I rendered Be my Lady and Minsan Lang Kitang Iibigin. I was so sure that I delivered the songs greatly….hhehehhehe…

December 19 - 21, 2006 - These days were days of deliberation of learnings of my students in the Preliminary Period. I scheduled all my exams for the three subjects at 5:00 - 7:00 PM to give them enough time to review and rest their minds from exams before my subject. SAD 1 took place, unfortunately only 3 students have passed the exams. Yes, the exam was just theoretically in nature but trickly made by me. The weakness of my students was when you restate the statement, everything went wrong. Lack of analysis and understanding as they say. I was so sure, they have lessons gained from that exam, aside from studying the lessons well, they have to understand and analyze them properly so that they will retain and remain in their minds. Extra efforts are to be applied and not just 1 night studying. What do you think of yourself, machine or computer? Even machine needs to rest to work effectively. Some of my students commented that their Christmas is not that happy because they were SAD with the result (taken from the acronym of the subject). The exam lasted for 80 minutes.

A day after was the exam for Presentation Skills in IT for 1st year students. I considered the last bringhome assignment as the Prelim Practical Exam. Based on the submission made, most of them did great with that assignment. Luckily, I had just one section taught for this subject, it’s IT 1F. The same story with my SAD subject, the exam was trickly done because I know also that this was the weakness of the class. The coverage of the exam was all about Presentation in general. But the question was, how many passed my exam?….seven students have passed the exam…The exam lasted for 80 minutes.

A day after was the last subject that I had my exam. It was the Computer Programming 2. I intentionally setted this one in the last day and perhaps the last exam for the week for my 1st year students. I am handling the 4 sections for this subject that was why, we occupied the whole laboratories from 5:00 - 7:00 PM. The exam went smoothly. My students were in their full strength and mind boggling concentrations in answering the exam. Questions ranges from Introduction to C++ to Multiple-Subscripted Arrays. Questions were mixed and you have to analyze each of them before you can answer. They were not just purely memorization, but my intention was to develop their skills in analyzing and understanding items carefully. After an hour, some of my student submitted their answers, luckily 16 students have passed the exam. The exam lasted as well for 80 minutes

Before I will erase it to my mind..hehehhe.., wait here’s another thing:

December 22, 2006 - Just this morning, we had our Institutional Christmas Party here in the School Lobby, what do you expect, Marco Polo hotel?…hehhehe.. It was a yearly gathering of all the employees of the university which includes the College, Elementary and High School Departments and also with out them nobody will take good care of everything in place and in order, the Maintenance Services Group. This year’s gathering was more exciting and full of surprises. Foods and gifts (1 balde with noche buena items) were more practical compared to last year. Over all, it was the best Institutional Christmas party that I have ever attended as far as my stay here in the university.

These are just tidbits of the memorable activities before the year ends.

God bless everyone! Have a fruitful celebration of the holidays!

It’s Friday Again!

December 15, 2006

It’s Friday again! Anyway, I will end up my Friday with a class in Presentation Skills in IT (Lab. Session). I have myany goals to accomplish this day supposedly but due to some concerns to be tackled, these goals are not accomplished in some ways.

Supposedly, my friday was free from classes. But due to some changes in the schedules, I have used my 4:30 - 5:30 pm to cater the remaining 1 hour lab. session in my Presentation Skills subject. I arrived at 12:10 noon this afternoon here in schools.

Actually, my original plan was to check all the assignment submitted by my students in Programming but instead of doing such, I have changed my mind. I went to the PE office located at the other building (formerly, it’s the ITE Program Building), I have an hour of chat with my one of my collegues in the College Department.

Tomorrow will be saturday and I have also differene agenda specifically for that day. To name a few, checking of the assignments, creating online exams and other academic stuffs.

Just to end the week of classes with a good end anyway.

God bless everyone and Happy weekends!

2nd Batch is on the go!

December 14, 2006

Yesterday, the first batch of sections took the Practical Exam in their Programming 2 Class with me. Most of them had the difficult time in analyzing and understanding the problem because they were not used to that kind of scenario.

In one section, there was this student of mine who nearly got the problem for three attempts in a row, but it was just presentation error he committed but still it was an error of the program. That guy is doing well in my class, initially before giving the problem, I was expecting that he will solve the problem in less than an hour, but definitely he did not. The rest of the first batch takers did not get the problem but more or less they have understood the problem statement, it was just in the manipulation of codes that matters a lot.

The next takers were from the section that I had a quarter of an hour of sermon because of irresponsible acts. No need to have the details on those, actually one of my students there have blogged of what had happened during that time. Definitely, again I was expecting that 1 guy from this class will solve the problems but unfortunately, the same story with other section he did not.

The problem was entitled, "Goodbye Duplicates", anyway, I will just blog the problem next time.

Today, the last batch of takers will attempt to solve the problems. Everything goes smoothly now with the first section currently having crunchy-bugging mind to solve and analyze the problem. Again, I am expecting that even 1 or 2 from these two classes will get, shall we say "nearly pointed" the problem correctly.

God bless everyone!

Hands-On Exam on Programming 2 Classes!

December 13, 2006

We are having our Prelim Practical Exam in my Computer Programming 2 classes. The problem will be solved using Array and Functions.

The problem is quite simple when you you look at the sample input and output but tricky in manipulating the codes. Two sections are the first batches that will take the exam and the remaining batches will be tomorrow. I will not change the problem statement for sure. It is their choice to share the problem or not to the other sections.

God bless everyone!

Programming class in Practice Mode!

December 12, 2006

Prelim Exam here is our university is fast approaching. To be exact, that would be this coming December 19 - 21.

In my Programming 2 Classes with BSIT 1, this week is a preparation for them for the exam especially for the Practical Exam. Actually, I let them practice and apply all the lessons we have this Prelim in our remaining lab sessions.

Ideally, my coverage for Prelim should be from Review on Functions to Pointers, but due to some weaknesses in the topic Functions, we consumed a lot of time to that topic, and explained most of the details from the scratch. We have just reached Multiple Subscripted Arrays. Good enough to start Programming 2.

Honestly, when we had our reviews for Programming 1 topics, most of them were not that "properly oriented" to the basics of programming, that’s why, I had difficult times to shift Programming 1 topics to Programming 2 topics because some of them cannot relate with what I am talking about.

But, I am hopeful that with determination, interest and eager to learn programming, they will survive definitely!

Wisdom for the Day!

Good day pipz!

I got this important quotes from a renowned world performer and a theater actress as well last night when she visited the PDA Honor List of 6. This lady is no other than Leah Salonga.

"It is easy to be famous but to stay famous is hard."

The six academates were truly amazed while Leah was telling them her experiences here and abroad.

Basically, that quote stated above is not new to us. It applies to all walks of life. Becoming famous in our respective field is easy but to sustain the fame, you have to maintain and work for it, do extra care of your craft and the people who always believing and supporting you. And of course, let God guide through your journey, He knows the best for you.

Maureen “Mau” Marcelo is the First Philippine Idol Winner!

December 11, 2006

A 26-year-old soulful crooner from Lucena City was declared the first-ever winner of the Philippine Idol during the star-studded finals held last night at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

Maureen "Mau" Marcelo, who belted out Whitney Houston’s "On My Own," was the sole female contender in the final three, including Gian Magdangal and Jan Nieto, who survived the six-month competition aired over ABC-5.

Marcelo, a daughter of a black American who returned to the Philippines to watch her in the finals, is a veteran of singing competitions having started singing when she was seven. She was a band singer before she joined the Philippine Idol.

She made it to the Final 12 during the wild card round after surviving the auditions that saw 10,000 hopefuls from all over Luzon alone. Marcelo received P1 million in cash and a recording contract with Sony-BMG and management contract with FremantleMedia.

The winner of the Philippine Idol, a spin-off of the hugely popular American Idol, was chosen by viewers who send their votes through text and the telephone.

Just like its American counterpart, the Philippine Idol has its resident judges - Ryan Cayabyab, Pilita Corrales and Francis Magalona.

Ryan Agoncillo hosts the competition that initially held its Performance Nights on Saturdays and Elimination Nights on Sundays, but the airings were lately moved to Sundays and Mondays in ABC-5’s attempt to attract more viewers. (Excerpt from Philippine Idol Website)
